Providing opportunities for community education and engagement
COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT
Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network knows that education and engagement is critical to improving our natural environment. Many residents have grown up not realising the district has a long history of land clearing, pest and weed infestation, planting of inappropriate exotic species, local extinction of many native plants and animals and severe damage to our rivers, creeks and wetlands. We aim to address this by sharing information and engaging with local stakeholders to increase our common understanding of the local environment, and the impacts it faces from human activities.
From time to time we have information displays at community events to promote our organisation and our goals. We also hold one-off information events; for example, we have run public sessions about the Middle Island Little Penguin project, Short-tailed Shearwaters, local moths and microbats, and the ecology of Kelly’s and Saltwater Swamps. Our bi-monthly general meetings usually include a guest speaker presenting on various topics relating to local fauna, flora or environmental issues.
ADVOCACY
We have a proud history of advocacy with relevant stakeholders on conservation issues, such as climate change, offshore seismic testing, local and state government planning, and pest plants and animals.
